How Erling Haaland Has Become A Global Icon.

Although Erling Haaland and his team Norway were eliminated over the weekend from the 2026 World Cup, he definitely has had his own unique success that might just be more meaningful than a World Cup win. One might question how that could even work but allow me to explain how Haaland transformed from one of the best (and tallest, at 6 foot 5) strikers in the world, to a global soccer icon that has gained over 20 million followers on social media.

Prior to the 2026 World Cup, Erling Haaland had already solidified himself as one of the best strikers in soccer history due to his incredible goal-scoring ability in the Premier League. He holds the Premier League records for almost every goal record, including: scoring the most goals in a season (36), being the fastest player to reach 100 goals, while also breaking the record for most goals across all competitions in a single season.

He not only has broken many Premier League records, but also is the Norway All-Time Goal leader (already at age 25), and holds multiple records from the Champions League. Speaking of the UEFA Champions League, Haaland has won that with Man City as well as winning the Premier League his first three seasons with Manchester City (22-25). Needless to say, Erling Haaland had already achieved an incredible amount of success, again only at age 25, however, things took a drastic turnaround throughout this year's World Cup.

Entering this tournament, everyone knew Erling would show up and maybe even win their group, but almost no one was predicting them to advance to the quarter-finals. However, that is exactly what happened as Haaland led his nation through an incredible Cinderella run during the World Cup. To no one's surprise, this shocking run, alongside Norway's intriguing fanbase, led to them quickly becoming America's "second team".

Especially when the US team's own Cinderella run ended, all Americans turned to Norway and of course at the center of it was Erling Haaland. This 6-foot-5 Norse soccer player, with long blond hair and looked like he could dominate American football, found himself "the guy" everyone was talking about. From viral clips of his ability to score, track down balls, or even knock people down when they tried to tackle him to memes, funny interviews, and so much more, Haaland now wasn't just one of the best goal scorers ever, but America's favorite foreign athlete.

If that wasn't enough to convince you that people are obsessing over Erling, get this: Haaland gained an unreal number of 22 million followers on Instagram over the last few weeks, which is almost completely unheard of.
