SpainAre The Champions of the World. (Game Summary)

After multiple weeks of fierce competition and insane matches, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to a abrupt end. While this tournament has done an incredible amount for the growth of football in the United States, with Spain winning the most prized trophy in this global sport, this World Cup has and will continue to accomplish many amazing things for this group of players and the country they have represented all tournament long. Entering this highly anticipated final on Sunday afternoon, there were of course multiple leading storylines that had been dominating the entire world, however none more than the master vs the padawan. Of course in other words, this matchup would be the first major matchup between one of the G.O.A.T's of football (Lionel Messi), and young sensation, Lamine Yamal. Both despite their age, have led their respective teams on truly magical journeys this summer and both came into the World Cup Final with completely different mindsets. For Messi, a chance to: win his 2nd World Cup in his historical career, be the first player to win 2 world cups whiles captaining a squad, and most likely end any G.O.A.T debated between him and Christiano Rolando. For Yamal the story is very much different as he is just starting his professional career and would cement himself already as one of the games greatest players even just at an incredible age of 19. At the end of the day, as a genuine football fan, I had just been hoping for a solid and well-played match no matter who came out on top. However I wasn't at all prepared for what we witnessed earlier today. In the first half that was mostly controlled by Spain. Turnovers quickly began to become the theme for Argentina's half however, in a tight face-paced half that ended in a 0-0 tie, fans were eager to see who would strike first and if that goal would be enough to solidify that team the World Cup Trophy. One can probably imagine what sorts of things happened in this first scoreless half, so I will skip right over to the 2nd half where the intensity quickly escalted. Spain continued to press nearly the entire second half, shot after shot, cross after cross. Argentina couldnt seem to find any momentum that left all soccer fans around the world wondering has the messi magic run out? A main reason why Argentina was able to stay alive throughout the first 90 minutes was due to the incredible play of their goal keeper Martinez, who even with a broken finger was able to track the ball exceptionally well robbing all of Spain's chances every single time. Shockingly, even after Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving his 2nd yellow card, reducing Argentina to 10 men, they still were able keep the game scoreless advancing to extra time after Lamine Yamal missed the potential game winning goal of a free kick. In extra time, more of the same continued with Spain controlling most of the play. In fact, Spain had scored a goal but it was soon called back due to a clear foul commited by them and also a pretty clear offside. Although dissapointed Spain contuined to press forcefully, shooting and moving the ball was great pace. As Spain tension was building Argentina finally was able to gain possession of the ball with 3 mins left of the first half of extra time. Other they finally were able to gain some possession, they were not able to generate any chances, atleast in the first half of extra time.

Heading into the 2nd half of extra time, with the entire world watching and waiting, Ferran Torres was able to get the goalkeeper out of position and score the long-awaited goal, giving Spain the 1-0 lead early in the 2nd half of extra time. However, Argentina was not out of it yet, as they would have around 12 minutes to find that equalizer even down one man. That's when Messi turned it on. All of a sudden, Messi looked faster, in control, and on a mission. From incredible passes to powerful shots, he almost looked like the prime Messi that we all know and love. In these last few minutes, Argentina looked like a completely different team that seemed capable of forcing penalty kicks, but at the end of the day, this pressure came too late. As you know, Spain survived, winning the match 1-0 in a thriller of a game that concluded and summed up the entire tournament.

As a football fan and lover, I can't thank the World Cup enough for globalizing this sport even more, especially here in my home country of the United States. For years, I have stood by this statement that football (or soccer) is the best sport in the world, and now after this sensation of a tournament, it has not only inspired my country but also my friends who have never been as interested as before this year's World Cup.

Congrats to Spain on a well-earned World Cup win, and even with this loss, congrats to Lionel Messi on still providing elite chances even at the age of 39. Whether or not your team or country ended up winning, I believe we can all still be thankful for the excitement and inspiration God gave us through this year's World Cup. Nothing would be possible without Him, and we all must remember that.
